Spending Time with Your Child a Gym Replacement

CrossFit AfflictionToday's lesson is a cross between Geek Fit and Geek Parenting. First of all, I only make it to the gym about twice a week and it's usually on the weekend. Normally I can squeeze in a one-hour workout on both Saturday and Sunday.
Lately the weather has been getting really nice down here in SoFlo so I'm finding it increasingly difficult to go work out in a gym when the sun is shining yet the temperature is in the low 70's. Having grown up in Maine, I really get a shot of outdoor nostalgia and a desire to play outside. My daughter is always up for a fun day about and this weather is really paying off for both of us.
So rather than get down on yourself for not making it to the gym just incorporate some exercises into your day.
Turning "Swing me, swing me!" into Kettle Bell Swings. This is pretty straightforward get your hands under your child armpits. Have her sit down on the ground with her legs between yours and you squat with you back straight. Use your hips and glutes to lift her up and explode with your arms out straight.
Pull Ups while she's on the swing. I give my daughter a few pushes on the swing and then I do a few pull ups on the large bar. I try to mix it up by using palms out and palms in. Do four sets of 10 of these and you'll be ready for that Jamba Juice you promised her. Depending on what types of monkey bars are at the playground there are usually a few types of back exercises you can do. Look for different places to hang from where you can put your feet up to mimic a low-row.
Ask your child to show you some exercises she learned in P.E. My daughter is a only 6 but she's in her third year of yoga. She's always got plenty to teach me, whether she's showing off her tree pose or just busting out some jumping jacks. Use the rest of your energy playing by playing tag or chase. This is good fun and sure to get you both laughing especially if you fake a fall. If she pounces on you while your on the ground try to knock out a few push-ups with her on your back. If that's too much, challenge her to a push-up contest and just have fun.
